GOEAST-EDITION - OUTSTANDING CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN FILMS ON DVD

Films from Eastern Europe are currently enjoying a considerable measure of success on the international festival circuit. Yet only in exceptional cases do they find their way to a more general German audience.
goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film has joined forces with two media partners, the Berlin art-film label absolut MEDIEN and the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper, to compile an edition of contemporary and classic East European films that invites viewers to undertake a journey of cinematic and cultural discovery in the privacy of the home.
The first films are being released to coincide with the forthcoming goEast film festival running from 9 to 15 April 2008 in Wiesbaden, and were selected from the illustrious programme of the preceding seven festival editions: KLOPKA, Serbia/Germany/ Hun-gary, 2006; CAMERA BUFF / BLIND CHANCE (double DVD), Poland, 1979/1981, DEALER, Hungary, 2004 and HOW TO DO IT, Poland, 2006.
The launch of the DVD edition represents a logical development of a strategy to win as many viewers as possible for the interesting output of Central and Eastern European filmmakers, which was the founding goal that inspired the first goEast in 2001. The pub-lication of further instalments encompassing New Cinema, Classics and Documen-tary is foreseen for each annual festival. In regard to selection criteria, Christine Kopf, goEast festival director, and Molto Menz, managing director of absolut MEDIEN, speak with one voice: “The goEast-Edition will showcase films that convince on the basis of stories, themes, and aesthetic quality: films that won prizes in Wiesbaden and met with international acclaim.“
