GOEAST, DAY TWO: THE POWER OF YOUNG FILMMAKERS AND POLISH WOMEN

goEast got off to a strong start yesterday with three competition screenings in the Caligari together with Kira Muratova’s appearance in the Alpha cinema, where she opened the Homage to her work, and Czech director Jan Svěrák’s presentation of two early films. At midnight in the Bellevue-Saal festival centre, the makers of the films featured in yesterday’s competition were still debating over the cultural and social conditions of filmmaking in their home countries.

This distinctly Polish Friday evening kicks off with the goEast Reading by acclaimed writer Dorota Masłowska, who presents excerpts from her rap novel The Queen’s Spew. The music at the follow-on party is provided by the all-women band MASS KOTKI from Warsaw. Both events take place in Kulturzentrum Schlachthof in Wiesbaden, beginning at 20.00 (reading) and 22.00 (party).

Friday, the second day of the Students’ Competition, offers a chance to see the award-nominated entries in the Animation and Experimental Film category. Viewers can vote for their favourites immediately after the screenings. All audience awards will be announced on Saturday, 25 April, after the close of part three of the competition.
