PORTRET POLONIA

Portret}Polonia is an open competition for short films dedicated to the common theme of Polish life in Germany. The project is organized by the educational centre Verein Schloss Trebnitz, and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).

A portrait of Mirosław Balonis, born in 1968, “Immigrant of the Year” in 2013. The Polish businessman has lived in Cologne for the past two decades. Was he determined to get ahead or was luck on his side? Is he maybe just a charlatan? Such questions are investigated together with notions of nationality and identity.

Veronika, Katarzyna, Anna and Zoe represent four generations of a Polish-German family. The four women give concise answers to basic questions about their life, offering some insight into the way their family keeps together, their experience of migration, and how they view their own place in society.

Delfina, 23, is a hairdresser in Poland, but wants to head west. Mariusz, 26, a long-haul truck driver, is already there. He spends most of his time in Germany – on German autobahns, to be precise. And in his kennel-like driver’s cab he leads a veritable dog’s life, eating out of tins, venturing outside only to pee up against his vehicle’s tyres.

An experimental documentary that takes an agile, entertaining look at migration and Polish life in Germany. Marcus S., the protagonist and narrator, ironically juggles bigotry and stereotypes, leaving the viewers to make up their own minds.
