PÜHA TÕNU KIUSAMINE / THE TEMPTATION OF ST. TONY

Successful manager Tony is struggling with both his professional and private life. In a post-communist Estonia that ended up as a primitive capitalistic state he is questioning the value of success and the purpose of being good. Tony has not only to dismiss 1000 employees and bury his grandfather, but must also deal with his wife’s infidelity. Eventually Tony makes a really bizarre discovery: he finds twelve pair of human hands in the undergrowth. A journey to the chasms of the human soul begins. Inspired by the works of Dante Alighieri, Hieronymos Bosch und Gustave Flaubert director Veiko Õunpuu developed a surreal and black humored nightmare in black-and-white.

Õunpuu artfully combines Martin Taniel’s outstanding cinematography with an almost agonizing sound and the multifaceted music of Ülo Kirgul. The result is a powerful analysis about the dilemma of reconciling morality and success in a world that apparently neglect charity and sympathy.
