FOCUS SLOVAKIA

Contemporary Slovak cinema strikingly boasts a number of dynamic directors and producers firmly established in Europe’s independent filmmaking landscape. In view of Slovakia’s rich film history, however, the country’s position is hardly surprising.
With a series of screenings in combination with the panel discussion “Slovak Cinema Now”, goEast 2014 trains a spotlight on filmmaking in Slovakia. The programming of other goEast sections likewise reflects this country-specific focus. Beyond Belonging, for example, includes AMATOVÍ TERORISTI / VELVET TERRORISTS by Peter Kerekes, the foremost Slovak documentary filmmaker of the present day, and SULNEČNÍ STÁT / STADT DER SONNE by Martin Šulík, a central player in contemporary Slovak film. Younger visitors have the opportunity to watch PEHAVÝ MAX A STRAŠIDLÁ / FRECKLED MAX AND THE SPOOKS during the goEast School Film Days. KÝM SA SKONČÍ TÁTO NOC / BEFORE TONIGHT IS OVER, a classic of the Czechoslovakian New Wave, is showing in memory of the director Peter Solan, who died in September 2013.
