Twenty-nine shots from the life of Andrzej Leszczyc, a youngnon-conformist on the threshold to adulthood and at sea in his world. Jerzy Skolimowski, who also plays the lead, edited his debut feature from films made as part of his training at the Łódź academy. In Poland the film acquired the status of a manifesto for a whole generation, and critics declared that his highly original work had opened up fresh aesthetic perspectives to Polish cinema. As Skolimowski’s alter ego, Leszczyc has a function similar to that of Jean-Pierre Léaud for François Truffaut in the latter’s Antoine Doinel cycle.
