STRUKTURA KRYSZTAŁU / THE STRUCTURE OF CRYSTAL
The meeting between two men who were students together – one has made a career as a scientist, the other has withdrawn to the countryside – demonstrates two attitudes to life: one is active, the other contemplative. The latter’s withdrawal into private life, into “inner emigration”, reflects an ethical alternative in the context of Poland. The plot is composed of improvised situations, shot on location with non-professional actors. Deploying a filmic idiom schooled on the new waves in France and Czechoslovakia, the 1969 film heralded a new aesthetic era in Polish film.
