THROUGH AND THROUGH

NA WYLOT / THROUGH AND THROUGH

A socially disadvantaged couple murders two old-age pensioners on impulse. The protagonists’ sense of futility, of being despised by the world around them, rouses an unquenchable desire to perpetrate a crime that calls to mind the resolute despair of figures in Dostoevsky. Although Królikiewicz set his debut feature in the pre-war years, the analogies with the Gierek era can scarcely be missed in a film whose delight in experimentation combines a tendency towards hyper-realistic stylization with distinct echoes of German Expressionism, Direct Cinema and the French Nouvelle Vague.
