THE DEVIL

DIABEŁ / THE DEVIL

January 1793. The Prussian army marches into Greater Poland. After a massacre in a convent a young nun and the would-be regicide Jakub are led to safety by a stranger. Jakub now becomes both witness to and agent of the collapse of any residual cohesion in a doomed society that abandons itself up to excess, murder and treachery. In thrall to the stranger – the devil in person – Jakub becomes a murderer. Reminiscent of Ken Russell’s ecstatic films in its deliberate provocation, DIABEŁ / THE DEVIL pulsates with daring fantasies of violence, sex and power, and was viewed as a heretical declaration of war. The drastic horror story never obtained release.
