MARXISM TODAY (PROLOGUE) / MARXISM TODAY (PROLOGUE)
Double Feature:
“I don’t eat bananas. And I’ve stopped drinking Coca-Cola, of course!” Petra Mgoza-Zeckay sits in front of a bouquet of red carnations. Up to 1990 she taught Marxism-Leninism at the Karl-Marx-Universität in Leipzig. Andrea Ferber and Marianne Klotz taught “ML” as well. The demise of the GDR brought with it a sharp drop in the status of “ideological biographies” like those of the trio of academics. So what remains when the new beginning is over? Visual artist Phil Collins undertakes a subtle and touching exploration of GDR history in his collage of interviews, East German instructional films, and footage from the archives of the state broadcaster DFF. A non-judgemental documentary film remote from collective denunciation, free from any sense of shame.
