Directors present cinema with commitment at DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” ON TOUR

goEast competition films in Sarajevo, Berlin, Vienna and Osnabrück

Wiesbaden / Berlin Cinema with commitment is on offer at the 7th DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” ON TOUR. The series, presented by the goEast Festival of Central and Eastern European Film (Wiesbaden) and the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (Berlin), begins on the coming Sunday 17 August in Sarajevo. It will also be a guest event until October in Berlin, Osnabrück and Vienna. Directors Natalia Mikhaylova, Eszter Hajdú (with producer Sándor Mester) and Aliona Polunina will be presenting their work and the issues they address in film discussions.

In the words of goEast Festival director Gaby Babić, “Documentary films offer background. In doing so they provide a contrast to the cursoriness of news images. The effects of despotic rule in North Caucasus or racist violence against Sinti and Roma in Hungary on the people themselves can be felt through portrayal of individual experiences on the cinema screen. The films selected for the festival, however, also seek to impart optimism. Therein lies their strength.”

According to the Head of Programs of Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future”, Dr Ralf Possekel, the DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” strengthens not only this important film genre, but also its committed filmmakers. “It is our goal to give them and their stories a public forum that goes beyond the goEast Film Festival with DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” ON TOUR.

The tour of four venues begins on Sunday 17 August
DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” ON TOUR starts on Sunday 17 August with ZELIM’S CONFESSION (Germany, 2013) at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Natalia Mikhaylova, director, presents her film on despotic power and violence in North Caucasus.
She will be presenting her documentary in Germany on Thursday 16 October at the Osnabrück Independent Film Festival. The protagonist, Zelim, is also expected to be present.

JUDGMENT IN HUNGARY (Hungary, 2013), winner of this year's DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” at goEast, is to be seen Monday 22 September at Kino Arsenal in Berlin. The award-winning film, which deals with extreme right-wing violence against Roma, will be the topic of the panel discussion following the screening. Director Eszter Hajdú, producer Sándor Mester and other guests will be speaking. Grit Lemke will be providing the moderation.

10 October, the event series will be guesting for the second time at the LET’S CEE Film festival in Vienna with NEPAL FOREVER (Russia, 2013). Aliona Polunina presents her highly amusing, absurdly grotesque documentary which accompanies two communist party nostalgists on a bizarre mission to Nepal.

About the Documentary Award
Since 2008, the DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” has been presented to directors who critically discuss societal developments and the causes of these within their countries and reveal perspectives that transcend frontiers. The prestigious prize was jointly awarded by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” and the goEast Film Festival on 15 April 2014 in Wiesbaden.

The series, DOCUMENTARY AWARD “REMEMBRANCE AND FUTURE” ON TOUR, selects films for presentation beyond the scope of the festival. The tour is on the road in Germany and other European countries for the seventh time.
